This is an example of a mom being taught to use the Cross Cradle Hold with her second baby and the problems from that hold.
Sheri:
-was taught the Cross Cradle Hold with her second baby
-struggled to nurse
-Cradle Hold was more comfortable, baby did a better job
My Experience with the Cross Cradle Hold Position
My daughter (my second child) had latch-on problems from the beginning.
I worked with two lactation consultants who both recommended the
Cross Cradle Hold.
It did allow me to direct my baby's head better, but it was very uncomfortable, so I was always tense when I nursed, which didn't help matters any.
It took a long time to get set up at each feeding, with a nursing pillow on my lap and a blanket folded under my hand so that my wrist didn't get tired.
In fact, the only way for me to make the Cross Cradle Hold work was with the use of a $40 nursing pillow, which was of no use to me once I returned to
the Cradle Hold.
When my daughter's nursing did not improve, I called Claudia, a La Leche League Leader, for help.
She suggested that I should try the Cradle Hold Position and I immediately felt more relaxed and comfortable, and my baby did a better job nursing.
My problems were not completely resolved (I was dealing with thrush), but nursing became the kind of relaxed bonding time that I remembered it to be with my son.
I believe the time I spent using the Cross Cradle Hold was counterproductive.
Thanks again for all your help.
